COSMIC

Central Oxford Structural Molecular Imaging Centre

The Central Oxford Structural Molecular Imaging Centre (COSMIC) is a state-of-the-art cryo-electron microscopy facility in the Dorothy Crowfoot Hodgkin Building in the centre of Oxford.

We have excellent facilities for structure determination of macromolecular assemblies using single particle methods. We are also equipped for the analysis of cellular systems using cryogenic electron tomography and cryo-correlative light and electron microscopy.

COSMIC is open to researchers from across the University of Oxford, as well as to those from other academic or industry settings. Dedicated staff provide expert user training and support, to facilitate an exciting range of structural biology research.

Our Equipment

TFS Titan Krios 300 kV cryo-TEM with Gatan BioQuantum K3 direct electron detector and energy filter, for high-resolution single particle analysis, cryo-tomography and cryo-STEM tomography

TFS Talos Arctica 200 kV cryo-TEM with TFS Falcon 4i direct electron detector, for high throughput screening of cryo-grids and single particle analysis

TFS Talos F200C TEM with STEM detector, for screening samples using negative staining and cryo-EM, as well as for cryo-tomography and cryo-STEM tomography

Zeiss Crossbeam 350 cryo-FIB-SEM, for cryo-lamella production and cryo-volume SEM.

Leica Stellaris 5 cryo-confocal microscope for cryo-CLEM, with added laser paths for time-resolved cryo-EM and cryo-super-resolution light microscopy

Two TFS Mark IV Vitrobots for preparing cryo-EM grids

Leica EM GP2 for preparing cryo-EM grids by back-blotting

Leica VCT500 sample transfer system and ACE600 high vacuum sputter coater, for cryo-EM grid transfer and sputtering prior to FIB-SEM

Primo micropatterning device, to optimise cell positioning on EM grids prior to freezing

High performance cluster computing for data storage and processing
